What happened at the end of Cheer season 1? ›

In the final episode, Lexi was filmed out partying and fans worried she would return to her old trouble-fuelled life. In her teens, Lexi even spent time in jail. Thankfully, Coach Monica at Navarro opted to give Lexi a second chance and after Cheer finished filming, Lexi returned to Navarro.

In fact, she actually made a brief appearance in Cheer Season 1 when she decided to commit to Navarro during her campus visit. The NCA National Championships were canceled during Maddy's first year on the squad due to the coronavirus pandemic, but she was able to compete at the national championships in Dallas in 2021.

In June 2022, five months after the second season of “Cheer” launched on Netflix, Harris pled guilty to federal charges related to soliciting child sexual abuse imagery and illegal sexual conduct with a minor. He is serving 12 years in a federal prison in Oklahoma City. So, for now at least, no “Cheer” Season 3.

Feel-Good Storylines

Season 1 was better than season 2 because of the storylines. In season 1, viewers learned more about the athletes and why they chose to go to Navarro when they could have gone anywhere with their athleticism. The common factor was Coach Monica taking a chance on them.

On Sunday, the head coach of the Navarro Cheer team announced her retirement after 30 years in the business.

Navarro has a similar mishap, but with one of their fliers, Gillian. On the first day, the team had no issues. But on the second day, Gillian missed her stunt, causing a major deduction in their final score. At the end, Navarro scored a 98.0708, and Trinity Valley won with a 98.2292.

In the Season 1 finale of Cheer, it was revealed Lexi had been kicked off the Navarro cheer squad after illegal substances were found in the car she was traveling in with her friends.

After two years at Navarro, she announced she'd be moving on in the Season 1 finale, only to later pop up again in Cheer Season 2.

Navarro College is a community college, which generally takes two years to complete, so some students who appeared on the first season, like Mackenzie Sherburn a.k.a “Sherbs,” have simply graduated or moved on to four-year schools.

The final episode concluded with a tribute card appearing on the screen, broadcasting the words, “In memory of Messai Mkria.” This left many viewers wondering who Messai Mekria was and how he was connected to the famous reality series, Cheer?
